I have been doing a bit of searching on the internet and using the forum and to my understanding the mint mark location often changes, but I'm curious to know when this "change" of location becomes if at all, a variety.

For example I have a few 1972 D Lincoln cents which look fairly normal, but if you overlay them the D on one out of the rest of the coins is actually sitting right below the D of the others, not in the same location at all. I read that mint marks can be in different locations due to the mint mark being punched onto the die by hand up until 1980's, I guess in a sense I am answering my own question but I was more curious on how many times does this happen within a year of production, do they punch the mark in on multiple dies for that specific year, or do they only punch the mark into the die again when they have become warn?

I hope all of that makes sense, to be honest I am more of a "visual" learner so sometimes reading things don't kick in until I read it a couple of times or see visuals.

Thank you guys in advance, cheers!

The mintmarks were always hand punched into the die until 1990. In 1990 the mintmarks were part of the design and this continues until today.
What is the differences between the two? On most of the hand punched mintmarks, the locations vary, the strength varies and the type of punches could vary also. Then figure in the distortion of the puncheon that added different looks on the shapes of the mintmarks.
On the 1990 forward dies the mintmarks are all located in the same location. They are all the same mintmark design and no variables or over mintmarks. Why? With them placed on the master hub, that carried it same mintmarks locations, same shapes. Past down in this line:
Not-Year-Specific,-Question-Regarding-1-Cent-Mint-Mark-Locations
The only variable would be doubling from the master dies, working hubs and working dies. The other varible would be from die wear. Many see all kind of things that look like this, or that. But the design is the same, just altered later down the line with doubling or with die wear/deterioration.
So pre 1990 coins that had mintmarks would be located in different locations because of them being punched into the dies by hand.
Post 1990 would all be the same locations and the same shapes. Just hub/die doubling and die wear would alter the coins struck then.

RPM's stopped in 1990,not 1980's. So prior to 1990, the mint mark location can vary from one working die to another.

Thank you Coop for the visuals & John1 for the correction on RPM years, I found a lot of similar posts on the forum but they were all coin specific so I thought I would ask and I am glad I did as I was noticing a lot of the mint marks on the coins I have been searching all seemed to be in the same spots accept for a few, but since I found more than one with an odd location I assumed it was most likely normal, I do know if the mark is in a super odd location (rim or,on Lincoln or touching the date ect) would probably catch some attention.

So to be clear, as long as the mint mark is in the upright position (not backwards or on its side ect) and is not touching any of the design or date, it is perfectly normal for the mint mark to be all over the place in that area prior to 1990?

Again, thank you guys.

Well mintmarks can be angled and still be normal:

Locations can be low or high and still be normal:

But these are RPMs that are close to the date. (That doesn't make them RPMs. The mintmark punch locations make them a RPM showing a spread:

It is the spread that is necessary, not being enlarged:

Not a RPM. No spread. The punching enlarged the mintmark, but no spread showing, not a RPM.
