PCGS - In this third installment of "Road to the 2020 Summer Olympics," we move to the 1964 Tokyo Games. After the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the next two games, the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the 1960 Rome Olympics did not see the issuance of commemorative coins. Accordingly, there is nothing to write about for coins themed around those two Olympiads. However, the 2020 Olympics will be held in Tokyo, the place where the 1964 Games were held. So, let's take a look back at the 1964 Olympic games.

The Games were originally awarded to Tokyo, Japan, for the 1940 Olympiad. But after the Japanese invasion of China, the honor of hosting the Games was awarded to Helsinki. In 1959, the games were once again awarded to Tokyo, making it the first time the Olympic Games were held in Asia. Several countries participated in the Tokyo Olympics for the first time, including Algeria, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mali, Mongolia, Nepal, Niger, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia. Interestingly, the nation of Zambia entered the 1964 Olympics as Northern Rhodesia, but the country declared independence before the closing ceremony and departed that Olympics as Zambia. East and West Germany joined forces and competed together as a United Team of Germany. Indonesia was banned from participation in the Olympics because of its banning Israel and Taiwan from games held in Jakarta. South Africa was banned for its Apartheid system. The People's Republic of China and North Korea also boycotted the Tokyo Olympics.
