I've been off the board for a while, taking a break from ancients and indulging in another passion of mine: Model Trains. I decided - or more accurately my wife gave me permission - to build a 4x8 N scale Japanese themed layout. We lived there back in the 90s and returned last fall to visit, and that rekindled my love of trains. Note: If you are a railfan, put Japan on your itinerary. It is an amazing place for railfans.

But I haven't completely ignored coins, checking out auctions, and making the occasional bids.

In the thread below, posted 3 1/2 years ago, I asked about Holy Grails.

Well, I just landed mine: Diva Julia, the deification issue of the Queen of the Severan Dynasty at a recent auction. Did I pay too much for it? Well, I'm going to have sell a chunk of my collection to accommodate it - but that's ok. The collection will be tightly focused, and this coin will be the crowning jewel.

So: ever landed your holy grail? How did you do it? What happened afterward? How do you feel about it?

If there is a Holy Grail it's a $10 gold Oregon Beaver. But I'll never own one.

Japanese railroads bring back memories of clattering hot cars full of cigarette smoke and the crumbling old Osaka station.

Not a good one. Just this one from the listing.

Ever-Gotten-Your-Holy-Grail?

When I started collecting ancients, I naturally gravitated towards the Severans. First, they minted lots of silver. I also like coins with women, and there are more women on the Severans than any other dynasty. Finally the stories of that era really deserve a proper miniseries treatment: the whole thing with Elagabalus, and his own grandma killing him - that's some good drama there.

So this coin has been in my sites for probably a good 5 years - but it was always beyond me. It comes up maybe once or twice a year.

I am not a huge train person, but I would Highly recommend a visit to Japan regardless of your level of railfandom.

You'd be amazed. The country has pretty much gone completely no smoking. They even restrict you from smoking and walking as this sign shows.

When the Japanese do something, they go all out.
