I was trolling ebay and I saw a 1952 Laos 20 cents for over a hundred bucks & multiple bids. Another that looks the same to me has no bids, starting at 50 cents. I don't get it.. I looked the coins up but I don't see why one would go for such a huge amount. Krause lists market value of the 50 cents at $25 and the 20 cents at $22.50. One set of the auctions lists them as "piefort with essai" - is that the difference, and what is it?

No bids:

The ones going for over $100:

Thanks for any help

Ah.... the piedfort with essai basically means it's a pattern coin that is probably made out of silver

The top two are just regular circulations.

That's about I I know. Hope that helps!

In general, piedfort or piefort simply means that a coin is twice as thick as the "normal" version while the design and the composition are the same. The Royal Mint (UK) for example issues such pieces An essai is a pattern with a design that may well be different from the design of the regular coin. As for piedfort pieces from Indochina, have a look at this page:

Piedforts are also struck several times more than average making the design details extra sharp. Quality production.

Thanks for this thread. I was just going through my French stuff and realized that I had a really thick coin. I didn't realize I had a piedfort. I wonder if the person I bought it from in 1997 knew it?

Probably not - it looks like it would be difficult to tell. I sure couldn't tell the difference in the pictures provided. Thanks, everyone, for the info!
