My first thought was DDD=die deterioration doubling or VLDS=very late die state. John1

Surface looks very "pity" (unlike the die flow lines from a VLDS) maybe cleaned some time ago.... PMD

Looks like that coin had an acid bath from the pitting I see.

acid bath may caused the pitting but how would it change the letters ? how is the W a blob , but the E not ?  or like in liberty there is a B , but look at the E  , or like the date the 1 is fine ,but the bottom of the 9 is thicker , how can acid bath do that ?

I considered acid,but leaned the other way because the rim didn't look typical of acid.cookiemonster,are those metal tweezers? I hope not. John1
