I have a coin I found in my grandmother's things and would like to know how much I can expect it might be worth before taking it to a local coin shop to look at (I am hesitant to do that without at least a ballpark).

It is a 1906 2-1/2 Liberty Gold coin. I have looked at some past posts but the people never posted pictures in order to see if someone could help. I am posting pictures here - it doesn't look like it was uncirculated because it has some dirt and also some "ding" marks. Can someone help with grading this?

Bigfredd is referring to this website: http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/2h...icesgd.shtml

I do not collect gold coins but my guess would be EF45 for the grade.
What is that on the obverse rim at 3 O'clock?

I agree. That is what I use most of the time. Remember, it's just a reference.

It's much more than XF-45. Maybe AU-55 or Ms-60. Can't really tell from the pictures though. It would probably qualify as 'damaged-cleaned' (cleaned because of the junk in the letters of the reverse, presumably) so it's probably not worth more than $120.

The spot at 3 o'clock is almost like a "run". If you look at the coin from the side there is a small pin hole. From the front it look like some of the gold is push into the center part and it's flat right at that spot.

Thanks for the reference information. At least it gives me a general idea!

I'd do MS-60.
Nice looking coin - except for the ding.

I took this coin to a dealer yesterday, they are claiming that it appears like someone tried to fix the "ding" by melting the coin? This sounds very strange. They said something like the rim shouldn't be as "high" as it was. Basically, except for the ding I don't see anything wrong with it. They originally offered $150 but then told me it was a "melt" quality. Is this common? I know very little about coins but I can't imagine that someone went through all that trouble... I guess I can take it to a few more places but was wondering what you thought.

Thanks!

This coin contains 0.121 oz of gold. If that is damage on the rim, then $150 was a fair buy price because that would kill the numismatic value, leaving only the gold value. If it is not damage, then that price was low by about $75 or so. However, the problem is that this is probably something that can only be determined by examining it in hand- it is just too hard to tell from the photos. I would certainly recommend taking it to a few other places and if you keep being told that it is damaged, then they are probably correct.

The rim damage and attempted repair work drop the coins value to melt or slightly above.
