jbohanon New Member United States 39 Posts	Posted 02/20/2020 9:37 pm Would appreciate some opinions on this coin. I've had two graders look at it and say they think it's an impaired proof. I've also had other dealers take a look and claim it's just proof-like. I know it's hard to judge without coin in hand, but one thing a few of them have said is that the reeding is different on proofs. I haven't been able to find any details on this as proof 20s are quite rare. Trying to decide if it's worth submitting. If it's clearly not a proof is there still some premium if it gets a PL designation? There is definitely reflectivity on both sides and no obvious signs of cleaning. Report this Post to the Staff

sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21786 Posts	Posted 02/21/2020 01:36 am The luster helps make this coin, but there are lots of tiny nicks and scratches which gives emphasis to the 'impaired' wording, even it it is a proof, of which I am also inclined to doubt. No wear, so definitely some sort of MS grade. Lovely coin, nevertheless. I don't know about American proof gold coins, but British gold coins have almost a 'cutting' feel to their edge milling. Gold is soft. That 'cutting' feel can very quickly dissipate, with even the slightest handling, with high MS gold coins, and this coin has obviously been handled quite a bit. It is one that may have scratches or problems with its surfaces that would render the coin less than desirable to a collector. An impaired Proof coin may even show signs of circulation and wear. Proof coins are graded similarly to the ways that we grade other coins. I'd never heard of impaired proof coin, but upon reading & copy/pasting the above definition, it's a far cry from being a proof. Report this Post to the Staff

Keep in mind, only 86 were struck so I'd think that would narrow it down. As for the last question, yes Proof-like designations command a higher resale value. No matter the case, a beauty for sure.
