While organizing my wheat pennies collected over the last 8 months from rolls I noticed an odd thing!The 1940's,WITHOUT mintmarks, outnumber the ones WITH mintmarks at a ratio just about 5 to 1. On the other hand, the 1950's WITH mintmarks outnumber the ones WITHOUT mintmarks at almost a 4 to 1 ratio. I know my sample is too small to be statistically significant and I don't mean to imply that these numbers have and real meaning, but I thought it was strange how the numbers almost reverse themselves between decades. Has anyone else ever looked at this and seen anything similar?

Hi Hockingzig do you have a RedBook ? check out the mintage numbers and I think you will be able to solve the mystery ! LOL its cool that you noticed the difference ! |

Checking mintages was my next thing to do but that extreme a difference seemed too much to be just due to mintage differences. Thanks for the info, I guess I know which ones to hold onto now.LOL!

Metalman, I just checked the mintages! AMAZING!The ratios are almost exactly what I was finding. Thanks for the guidance. Next time I will look before I post!

Indeed...looking at the mintages you now know why you didn't find a 1909S VDB or a 1914D in those too. LOL

I'm glad you posted it. I new that the heats from the 40's and 50's were common bu I hadn't realized the ratios were that skewed. You taught me something new, and I've been at this for 35+ years.

Neat observation! Even if the mintages don't agree, it often does happen that small samples get biased this way. For instance, living in the west, I have in my wheat hoard obtained a bias towards mintmarks. When I die, somebody might sell all my 1940s wheats to a guy who lives in Virginia, say, and skew his totals. Gee, that's a morbid thought... sorry, I was actually in a good mood so far today.  |

bibd, actually what it might be showing is that over the long haul(say 50-60 years) coins get distributed fairly evenly in all areas of the country and may not be as regionalized as we like top think they are. I am in Ohio so some of you folks in other areas might want to take a look at what you've got and see if the ratios vary significantly from region to region. Keep in mind, my numbers are only coins pulled from circulation in the last 8 months. If you are buying large lots that have been high-graded there will be a different bias. It would be an interesting study for sure if we had large numbers under similarly collected conditions.

Oh yes, of course. The mintmarks mix in pretty well due to circulation over the years. Agreed.
