This Leo VI "The Wise" 40 Nummi was listed as an Imperial Roman silver denarius. I didn't have a leo VI, and it was inexpensive so I bought it. Where do some of these sellers get their descriptions from?

It's laughable what some descriptions people come up with. BTW the reverse legend translates to "Leon, by the Grace of God King of the Romans"

Unfortunately, some coin dealers only know modern coins, and even them, the majority of their business is in slabbed coins, or modern mint product.

When something like this comes to such a dealer, it matters little if their knowledge is lacking when it comes to Byzantine coins. Their business has no market for such a piece.

This sort of situation could very possibly explain the badly mistaken description.

Yes, he got the Roman bit right @echizento, but the date he gave as 96 - 235 AD was almost seven centuries out!
