hm... either it has been buried before or that some kid during 8th grade decided to electroplate it with copper.
Anyways, if the planchets are the same size and it has the same ring as the nickle, it's probably not an error

I see nickel/nickle spelled 2 ways a lot, even by Americans on this forum.
Which is the correct spelling? Is it like the metal it's partially made from ie nickel or the other way?

Since the nickel is 75% copper, I wouldn't be surprised if there are environmental conditions which corrode the copper. It might have been buried.

Correct spelling is 'nickel' - 'nickle' is always wrong.
This coin suffers from environmental damage, most likely from being buried.

I have dug up nickels that looks like that with my metal detector.

I agree ...This NICKEL :-) was buried. I lightened the picture and there are definite signs of environmental damage caused by spending some time under the surface of the soil. My experience indicates a burial east of the Mississipi:-) Maybe even the North Eastern U.S. :-)
Thanks, Bill

I agree, I am from the northeast and that is exactly the same color my great grandad "Horatio" was when we dug him up last year.

I agree with norseman, common metal detecting find, just environmental damage.
