I only see proofs of this coin on ebay, is there no circulated versions?

A graded PR61 sold for $300. What would you grade this one?

@gt04, that is an interesting coin. According to numista, it was issued as part of a proof set (so no, none were intended for circulation). Here is the link:

I agree that's a very interesting coin. I'm not qualified to comment on the grade.

BUT... I just did a bit of research ... and would like to report some statistics on this type and invite comment from CCF members

1. NGC reports the mintage as 2,000
2. I can count 15 different examples of this coin that have been bought or are currently up for sale just on ebay, and a few additional examples on other auction or archiving platforms. That amounts to about 1% of all the minted examples of this coin turning over in just 90 days! While I have never looked for this kind of statistic before (because most of the coins I collect have no mintage statistics), it seems like a very high turnover rate. So this is my question to more experienced CCF members: have you EVER seen such a high rate of sale of a single type ij relation to its mintage

For me personally, it means I would never buy such a coin as an investment right now (because those statistics say "BUBBLE!"), unless it were available at a much lower price than what I see on ebay.

As a collector however, I find it an interesting coin, and if I were collecting modern commemorative coins of UNESCO sites, I would have it on my radar screen, and not worry too much about whether the price were $100 or $250 (but I would not pay $500 no matter the grade ... just my opinion).

Krause lists this one as KM-4, 30 grams of .999 silver, .9645 ASW, Proof only issue. 2,000 mintage. 2018 catalog value was $450 for PF-65 which I think yours will most likely grade.

PF65? That would be great.

Yea I also noticed a lot on ebay. Perhaps there are fakes? They do have serial numbers on them. I'm not sure what you mean by bubble? But I assume it means the bubble will eventually pop?

@goterps, I don't know much about modern issues like this. I am just pointing out a pattern ... maybe it means nothing.

Personally, I don't worry much about resale value when I collect, because that will most likely be someone else's problem. I collect what appeals to me, and I try to do my research so that I don't get taken.

If you want this coin because it fits a collecting goal, or it appeals to you in the moment, go for it.
