#1 Has this coin been "cleaned"? And I mean 'improperly cleaned' as in if submitted to a grading service it would receive a details/improperly cleaned etc. designation?

#2 In addition, and more specifically, does a single surface hairline scratch located to the left of the portrait on the obverse dictate the coin being automatically declared damaged and/or defective?

#3 What grade would you wise folk give this coin?

NOTE: This coin is presented as an XF.

#2 I don't think so. I've seen worse scratches on MS63 graded coins.

#3 Good VF. The brow has almost disappeared and I'd expect the top or the left hand side to be more clearly defined.

On the reverse, the lions should have more detail for an EF coin, also the shield border has many small nicks.

I am Danish. Good VF is spot on for the (conservative) Danish grading standards, which actually means this coin is probably AU55-58 in the US.
In the U.K the "old" graders tend to grade in the same conservative grading way as we do in Denmark.

In Denmark this coin will probably sell for about $50-70, if NGC graded it might go higher. In DK we do not go for slabbed coins !

1 Possibly - looks too pale for a 140 year old coin in gVF, looks sterile and unnatural.

2. gVF I agree - too worn for EF, top lion flat and some light wear on the hair

3. Can barely see it. Only the most pernickety would call it damaged, to me damaged it when it has a ding or a hole in it - not a barely noticeable scratch - if anything the coin has character for it.

Overall its a beautiful coin.
