Okay, your great Aunt Sophie has just passed into that coin store in the sky.

A reading of her will says: "I hereby bequeath my wonderful nephew/niece $500,000, BUT.... he/she MUST spend it on a coin collection. Any money not spent on coins will be donated to my foundation for 'Save the Squirrels'.

Now, you have $500,000, what would you buy?

My dream sets:

Gem Unc Set of Barber dimes
Gem Unc Set of Barber quarters
Gem Unc Set of Barber half dollars (including the 1892 O micro O.)

More to follow after I add these up.

Here goes:
Barber dimes: MS-64= $119,350
(without the 1894S)
Quarters: MS-64 $222,290

Half Dollars: MS-63= $214,950 less the 1907 S in MS-63, (@$4,500) and the 18092 O micro O @ $52,500= $157,950.

Total= $499,590.

So, I have managed to leave $410 to my squirrely friends, or I'll just buy a couple of extras, and leave some nuts for the squirrels.

Please ignore the ending of the above, apparently I can't edit this.

For starters, I would have to assemble the greatest Eisenhower dollar and Franklin half dollar collections the world has ever known; just because I like them so much.

Then I will shift gears and focus on early 19th century American coinage. I have avoided going beyond what is necessary to fill the 7070 and I have no idea what it would cost; probably because there is currently no way I could afford (time and money) to seriously collect them.

I would buy as many 1948 Franklin half dollars that I could find and try to corner the market on them.

I would buy the biggest collection of wheat cents I could find. Then junk bags of silver to go through. That would keep me occupied for about 15 years!

First off I would keep my plan a secret until I had all the coins, don't want any of you driving up the price on me (LOL)
I would start buying all the NGC/PCGS certified Carson City gold coins I could find at MS55 or higher and just keep buying until I ran out of money. I really like those coins, just can't afford them in the real world. They have history and rarity on their side and are beautiful as well.

I'd buy an AU-58 US Type Set, including gold, one coin at a time over the next 5 years or so. And NOT the Dansco 7070 version, but a really complete one. I think half a million would cover that

I don't think I would change my habit of slowly buying coins. That much money could cover my collecting for several lifetimes.
I'd look for a "stable" place to park that $500K, and use the return to start researching/collecting another area, such as hammered silver coinage of Europe.
I know--pretty dull idea.

I like the idea of buying AU-MS key coins from different
varieties, until the money runs out. Nothing for the
squirrels.

Imagine buying half a million of only 1916 SLQs!
Corner that market!

That would be a neat trick, considering that only 52,000 of them were minted....

You could buy around sixty 500-ct. green Mint boxes of American Silver Eagles, then spend the rest on American Gold Eagles, and that would be a 'coin collection', by any definition!

If a provision was attached to the will specifying that they be 'collector' coins, well then it would be quite easy to buy $500K worth of pre-1934 Gold coins.

Anyone on this board could probably spend the $500K in a week or two just by buying high-grade PCGS/NGC-slabbed coins on ebay!

I think he was saying a Half Million Dollars worth.
Or at least I hope that is what he meant!

Not very many 1916 S.L. Quarters are for sale at any given time (there's only 9 of them on ebay as I write this), so it could take years to buy $500K worth of them!

I would go buy $500,000 in current circulating coins from the bank. I satisfied the stipulations of the will. And the following day I would deposit all of into my account. Then pay off the house and all other bills.
