Hi all, I have inherited a coin collection with coins of all ages and from a great many countries. The subject is completely new to me and confusing. With the collection came a very large book called the directory of world coins 2006. I have many questions but I am an English expat living in Spain for many years and this subject does not appear to be high on the priority list. Around 80% are in cardboard squares, stapled in the corners or in specially prepared presentation wallets or plastic boxes with proof, uncirculated and some with certificates of authentication from a government or mint. Where do I begin to ascertain exactly what I have. Sorry if this is basic knowledge to you but any help would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, photographing the coins, I have a Sony DSLR A380, is this suitable

Looks like you have a big job ahead of you.
There are knowledgeable people on this forum for just about all coins foreign,
ancient or local. If you have a question on any coin, post a clear photo of both
sides in the appropriate Forum and specify your question.

Here is a link for advise from our own forum.

Welcome. The best source to get a rough idea of the value for US coins is the Red Book by Whitman publishing. This is a good source to know what is worth more than a few cents. The mega Red Book has more pictures and more details but it's a beast.

Some quick tips. All coins other than cents and nickels 1964 and earlier are 90% silver and worth more than face. Even in bad shape the dimes are worth over $1, the quarters are about $2.50-$3, the 50 cents about $5.50 and dollars $13-$15. Most series of coins have a few dates that are worth money the rest are common and usually not worth much. Foreign coins generally aren't worth much in the US unless silver or gold.

If I was you, I would get the Red Book. Slight the coins into valuable, worth melt and spendable. There will be things that are spendable in every collection.

As JimmyD noted above, the advice in this thread should prove invaluable.

So to me I would do this in a few steps , firstly I would guess how much time per day or eek you have to this project,

then sort the coins into countries and by value as on the coin,

consider the metal are they silver or some alloy like nickel /copper,

then look at the highest quality coins and find them online, use a notebook to keep track of info you find . . .

no coins will sell by their condition, popularity, denomination,

generally you might assume a french coin might have a higher value than a coin from middle africa , simply because their are more coin collectors to push up demand in franc than in central africa...

Once you get some idea of what you think are big ticket items then seek helpers online to gain some idea as to demand and value,

generally I think most average collections have a lot of cheap fillers that have just been acquired and some very nice /potentially valuable stuff ; sometimes that value might be in the tens or hundreds of dollars or even higher,

any quality image will do to give an image as to the state and type of coin like its quality overall. You may find some awesome looking coins and the image shows that type of coin is worth $8 only.

but you need some sort of feel for the overall collection and then you can decide if its worth paying to have it professionally appraised.

if all this sounds to much or your very busy or whatever you could simply offer it as a bulk sale or gift it to someone like a youngster.

Remember Rome as not built in a day, you might spend to years of spare time to nail down solid idea of its contents and value ! ! !

Just go slow and if you have the interest you ill find you get a lot of basic information on coins even in the first few weeks.

sure you will not be an expert but at last you ill know never try and clean coins, ho to handle them to prevent damage and ho to avoid a rip-off con artist eager to separate you from certain coins.

many coin lots are best sold as is intact rather than separately removing the best coins and then finding their is little of importance left to interest buyers...

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for our loss but I hope the coins are a nice reminder of your relative.

A good online source for foreign coins, ID and value in Numista or NGC.
An online search might include the Date, country of issue, denomination and Numista or NGC.
Lots of times Numista will even include varieties.
Older, uncirculated, well struck coins will hold the most interest to collectors.

ps. Please be aware that those cardboard squares may have PVC in the plastic film which can cause a greenish film where the film meets the surface of the coin as the plastic breaks down. The staples can also scratch underlying coins, so be cautious with moving them around.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
