started sorting this new collection and have just found 4 loose coins in an envelope. They are dollar coins dated 1901, 1902, and two dated 1921. They have no protective covers or anything. Any reason these should be sperate from the albums of other US coins

Assuming that you have other dollar coins in an album, my best guesses as to why these would be separate are:
They are duplicates.
They are counterfeits.
The prior owner just got them and hadn't had a chance to put them in the right place in the album yet.

What's the album coins look like? Maybe they didn't make the former caretaker's grade.
