@tlc, first welcome to CCF. Perhaps this particular cent had a meaningful story associated with it and this is why it was saved. For sure it has seen rough use in circulation.

Why was it in his collection? Perhaps he thought it was interesting--regardless of condition.

If anyone went through my collection, they'd see some great stuff, and some very curious stuff few others would want. Collections tend to be personal.
