From my noodling last night I recovered this Australian 1999 5 cent piece. At first I thought " PMD", however after further inspection I am not so sure.

I have attached an image of the coin below. Apologies for the "little bit rough" photo of the edge of the coin.

As you can see, the damaged sector of the coin (highlighted by red arrows) has different expression on each side of the coin. On the reverse it expresses itself as undulations.
On the obverse it expresses itself as a "double rim". The reeded edge of the coin has not been damaged at all.

Any feedback on the nature of the damage on this coin would be much appreciated

Squire

I would say PMD ... looks like it was subjected to a force not unlike an electrical can opener or similar?

Thanks for your helpful response coaster
Yes, I think it is possible that an electric can opener could have been responsible for the mangling of the 1999 5 cent coin
Mind you, I do not use electronic can openers. I am an old fashioned guy and I open my cans manually with an old fashioned can opener

I was hoping there would be more people who had ideas as to what happened. I'm a fence sitter at this point in time. I really can't see a can opener doing that to a coin.

I thought application of heat might have been a possible cause.

Keep the coin in a 2x2 until you get an explanation that satisfies you.

Thanks for the suggestion Nevol
I will do some web surfing to see if I can find a similarly deformed coin
I will post any of my "Internet finds" from this search

I though that maybe there was a bit of cotton waste or something stuck to the planchet, causing the coin to be tilted during the striking process, but the damage is probably too far around the coin.
