Hi everyone. I am known as Strax on here. I am from West Yorkshire in the UK. I collect British coins and tokens. I currently have a question about gaming tokens, known as Cumberland Jacks. Issued from 1839 as a satirical commemoration of Augustus, cousin of newly crowned Queen Victoria, going to Hanover. If anyone has a good knowledge of these, please reply to me. Thanks. Strax

Welcome to the forum.

You probably know the following already, but for anyone else reading this thread...

Victoria became queen in 1837. She was the daughter of the 4th son of George III. Since George III the British king was also king of Hanover. Under Hanoverian law a female could not become monarch of that state, so George III's 5th son Ernest Augustus became king. One of Ernest's titles was Duke of Cumberland.

Ernest was unpopular in Britain and the "Cumberland Jacks" were one expression of that, basically celebrating "good riddance".

If you collect To Hanover counters then the book you need is To Hanover & Prince of Wales Counters. A checklist of Imitation Sovereigns and their Fractions. By Martin R Warburton & W Bryce Neilson, published by Galata in 2014.

Further to the history, some tokens displayed Augustus's face as that of a monkey! Not found one yet! Thanks for the book recommendation.
