I lean toward EF-40, but I could see disagreement here. The horn is not the only grading factor.

Decent strike for a 1927-D. Modest clash polishing, most noticeable on the second feather / buffalo's head and on LIBERTY / right rear leg. On the obverse, the hair at the forehead, ribbons, and second feather rachis are weak. LIBERTY and the date are strong. I think the obverse comes in at VF-30. The reverse is much better, with an EMDS die and decent strike. There is a full horn, weak but complete tail (not split), 1/3 of the hair on the head, and over 1/2 of the hair on the back. There is some detail on the forelegs and strong detail on the eye and beard. I think the reverse hits EF-40. I'd net this at VF-35, straight grade. The rim hit and field damage near the right rear leg are concerning. I can't tell if this is a small lamination or PMD. Despite the issues near the leg, the strong strike and EMDS reverse give this decent eye appeal. Not many 1927-D Buffs have good eye appeal. This is better than most. At $35, you did well. Regardless of technical grade, the strike quality alone makes this a good buy.

Still VF-35. I do like the strike, though. I still can't get a handle on the damage / lamination near the right rear leg.

I now lean toward VF-35. Stepping back, both sides look a bit soft and worn for EF.

boarder line VF/XF. I'm leaning XF40 due to the hair clasp separation as well as the feather from the hair is defined and the back fur is almost completely separated from the body
