I have come across a gentleman who is liquidating his inventory of coins and currency. He had an 1865 2¢ Shield that appears to be in MSRD condition. What should I be looking for in regards to this coin possibly being cleaned?

Is there an easy way to tell? Aside from them being red.

Please show us pics from different lighting angles for further assessment. Seems to be light wear, but not clear that it's been cleaned.

Also I think pics outside of the 2x2 would be more useful.

I think it is MS but your lighting is drowning out any notion of being cleaned . Try to take more lifelike photos . Also I'm not sure what that circular mark is on the right side of date .

Can't tell if cleaned or possibly very late die state. The surfaces are very corroded, especially the reverse. My first reaction was harsh cleaning, but the others' observations make me reserve judgment pending further photos. Your lighting is very bright, but this looks like it could go RB rather than RD. Common date MS 2 cents are not very expensive. Last year I bought an MS65RB CAC 1864 large motto on ebay for about $475. You can get a lot of coin for the money in this series, especially at grades under MS65. I personally would choose a different coin, unless you get a particularly good deal on this one.

Here is out of the flip and on a black background. Having a hard time not getting so much light on coin, my phone is picking up light from kitchen light.

I was able to pick this coin up for cheap. He was liquidating what was left of his collection before his daughter came up from Florida. She could care less about his money collection and probably give to kids to spend as pennies. He has already auctioned off over $20K of his collection and I just met him 2 weeks ago. Here is another pic, different settings on phone. I may have to wait for daylight tomorrow to get anything better for your review.

Quote: What should I be looking for in regards to this coin possibly being cleaned? Hold the coin on the edge between your index finger and thumb, and tilt the coin back and forth under light. You are looking for hairline scratches. The hairlines in the field areas are the easiest to spot. In one of your photos there looks like what could be hairlines to the right of the date up to the T in Trust. Scratches are below the surfaces and die polish lines are above the surface. On copper color is important compare the red color to a red coin in a TPG.

IMO it's AU. IMO if it's been cleaned, it was done by being dipped. Don't see any indication of rubbing.

Here are the last two pictures I'll subject everyone to. Nice sunny day to bring out whatever I can for details. I appreciated all the input from everyone.
