Hello there,

I have two 1968 proof sets with contrasting pennies... one frosted, one brilliant. I'm new and seeing two different coins is facinating.

They're both nice. However, the frosted one is quiet beautiful and it (to my undereducated eyes) seems to have a RPM? RPM-001 on Variety Vista, maybe?

What's the consensus?

Thanks,
Cruton

They are proof sets, not mint sets

I apologise... New poster error. The first few I posted were to show the mint mark at different angles . I'll retake a few showing it right side up.
Thanks for your understanding.

Yes, it's a proof set. I have two Proof sets and the pennies look completely different. I misspoke / typed.

The areas that are raised on the mintmark, are from punch damage to the punch that makes the mintmark. Not it does not create a duplicate of any area on the mintmark? It is common to see the 'S' mints with a damaged punch issue. Even on a RPM:

Note in the lower loop, you can see mintmark damage, doubled on the affected area. Where there is not damage, you see the doubling. (Note the top enlarged part of the RPM) On your coin, there is not duplication of the design, just showing the areas of the punch that were damaged.

This mintmark punch damaged is from punching the mintmark on the hardened dies. Thus after punch several times on the dies, they get altered from the hammered into the die.
