Hey guys! First post here, new in every and all coin collecting shapes and sizes! With the chaos of what's currently going on, decided to finally go through this old chest that was handed down to me. I catalogued the Canadian and American coins, and tried my best to follow the guides that exist on which ones stand out / are rare and their specific versions and whatnot. Let me know which ones I should post pictures of and if I have any coin that is ultimately rarer(er). I'm also not sure yet if I will be selling any of them off, but I definitely had a few questions.

I noticed a lot of them are either dirty or have some type of aging to them that reminds me of battery acid and whatnot, disclourations and what not. I also read a few threads on this forum (which is what brought me here in the first place) on the fact most members don't appreciate cleaned coins purchased off ebay and such, so I'm guessing it's safe to say.. DON'T CLEAN THEM! But, is there *any* type of super non abrasive and community-approved cleaning of any sort? Like even just soak them in some warm water and remove any stickiness some of the coins may have, etc. ? I'm completely new to this, and definitely not looking to remove any of the coin's charms or value! Anyways, here's a list of the coins + paper money (Canadian ones) and if there's anything you guys would like to see!

Found-An-Old-Chest..-Let-Me-Know-Which-Ones-To-Take-Pics-Of-And-Post!

True found these ones as well

1899 nickel
1906 nickel
1919 nickel
1945 Newfoundland dime
1942 penny
1916 penny
1936 dot penny?

So here is a perfect example to my question above:

The 1936 penny (for one is it dot 1936?) and second of all seeing as if it is, it has a certain appeal and value, am I not better off cleaning it in any way? Remove that green rust or whatever off it?

If not on that 1916 penny that's completely immersed in rust or something, I should not clean it? Assume I want to sell it on ebay, I throw it in a 2x2 sleeve as is and that's it? There's no manicuring as per say to do on it?

Then that 1942 penny although it doesn't seem to be too rare, the fact it's bronzed is that considered red toning?

Welcome to the world of coin collecting I guess haha

DO NOT CLEAN ANYTHING as you stated. Info will be provided for silver copper etc soon.

Thank you for answering and for the welcoming! Will definitely do, should be able to take a pic shortly. As for my 1936 "dot" penny I know they say only 3 are know. To have been minted, but I'm not kidding this one has rusted or whatever you want to call this green to it and EXACTLY where the dot would be, it's as if it's missed the rusting covering it entirely as if there's a dot hidden under there.. how could I confirm or clean the coin at least minimally to remove this green stuff which I'm assuming kills the coin's appeal entirely?

The site really compressed the image Any photo uploading sites you guys recommend since they refuse imgur links?

The problem is over 90% of the image is your hand. Crop it first and you'll be perfectly fine.

About your pictures:

1. Please show them right side up (the CCF image optimizer can rotate your pictures)
2. Photograph them on a flat surface and crop them to only show the coin.

This will make it easier to help you.

Those older banknotes (1935 and older) could be worth a bit depending on the condition. Please give us pictures of those.

Very true didn't think of that thank you! So yeah in the first picture that's darker we can see that dot that pops out of this green rust stuff second pic is to show you how green it is and I just saw another thread someone said to dip his quarter in an acetone bath to remove some green gunk and people approved of this.. so now I'm confused on this no cleaning thing hava

The green is not "rust" ... it's a chemical reaction to the metal, usually by the environment. There ARE some things that can "help" but nothing is going to remove it all, because under the green is some component of corrosion. You can use distilled water to at least dilute whatever is making things sticky .. some regular water contains minute chlorine compounds that's not good for copper.

Again, good close magnification (probably no more than 5-7X) with a camera taken at directly 90 degrees from the coin will help us. Your laundry list of what's in the chest doesn't do us any good unless we know what king of wear/shape/grade the coins are in. Start boning up on learning how to grade.

Please don't dump everything in one topic. For example, all the notes should be in the notes forum so the proper people see them.
