This may be old hat to many on this forum, but it was new to me. I hope none will mind my sharing it.

We are all familiar with George Kruger Gray's coin designs. They are brilliant art, and among the most beautiful and iconic of Canadian coins. He was also a gifted painter and stained glass maker.

What I never had heard before is that he nearly drowned in 1893, in the same incident that tragically cost the life of his brother and a friend. He was rescued by a teacher named Eyton Owen, who risked his own life to save him from what sounds like a rip tide. Here is an online article about the event.

Interesting history.

George Kruger Gray's very first coin design that was issued into circulation, was (in my opinion), was probably his best:-
1927 Australian Canberra Florin.

Two very interesting and educational
Google Images searches can be done for George Kruger Gray:-

1. Canberra Florin - a .925 silver coin, commemorating the opening of Australia National Parliament Building, in 1927.(11.31 grams, 28.5mm dia.)

2. Coin Designs of George Kruger Gray - This search will reveal the huge number of different designs produced by him, for the British Empire (later British Commonwealth of Nations).

It is difficult to translate any art concept onto a small metallic object that has design requirements due to law and commerce. His designs were brilliant and timeless.
