I'm with you Grape! Julian has the money into it, so of course he will want it to be higher, LOL. Superb coin, I was late to the party but My initial grade was MS66 the + would be for the toning. There are 6 MS67 in population. The Garrett collection only had an MS60! Any idea from Julian the provenance of this coin? It sure has the appearance of that era on an original surfaced coin, Heritage has a similar looking one in MS65 coming up for auction at CSNS in April, no RPD though, and not any where as nice as this example. The no stars/no legend and plain field has always been my very favorite of Gobrecht's designs. I've had a few no stars dimes but never the Half Dime that I can remember.

I used to look at Julian's inventory at every show he was at when I was a young starting dealer. He and Art Kagin were both always so kind and both had amazing coins, worth an ungodly amount (to me and most people) that they bought in the 1950's, so their cost was nil compared to the market (1979-1982), Julian along with Art were always so nice to me I will never forget either of them. Wish I lived a bit closer to Silver Springs.

I dunno, haven't been in the last few days, but I can text him and ask.

I can tell him you said hi. I never met Art Kagin sadly, but Julian speaks well of him. If you're ever in the area feel free to come in and say hello. If you PM me your name I'll tell him specifically who said hi.

65? Seriously?

I went back and looked at the photos again. Usually I can figure out what they saw that justified the grade. I don't have a clue what they saw here to hold it to 65.

Cant agree more, I've tried to get him to send it for reconsideration but he says he'd rather market it as is and just take nice enough photos to prove the grade. Unfortunately that doesn't work in today's market. 25, 30 years ago? Sure, not anymore.

GrapeCollects, CoinHunter27 mentioned it is a repunched date. I have the same coin in a lower grade. Here is a link to the variety (posted by oih82w8), which I'm surprised the PCGS didn't identify:
