Hey guys, so definitely no secret about the current state of affairs (what actually brought me to go through an old chest that was handed down to me). I was just reviewing the RCM site because as much as I don't consider myself a coin collector by any means, I grew with parents who loved to bring my siblings and I to the PO and pick up some mint coins.

Anyways, I noticed the "2020 Mother Earth Silver 20$" coin that says is set to be released in mid-April and that there's an official montage of 4000.

My questions are the following:

(1) For one, among coin collectors and hobbyists, are purchasing these types of coins annually a generally accepted and encouraged practice? Or is it considered more of a "sucker buy" and things like that. I notice a lot of gold coins, etc. as well that don't reflect their gold bullion value. Are these coins essentially zero-sum investment-proof? Is it safe to believe that any coin purchased from the RCM will not ever be worth less than what it retailed for (assuming it's condition remained the same of course), and one would hope that the coins/kits beat inflation on a yearly basis? Are there any coins that are produced annually that are actually good investments and appreciate nicely over the years?

** this is just a general question in regards to me getting educated on the ins and outs of the RCM and their product offerings **

(2) My second question and the one that popped in my head the second I saw that coin being ore-sold on their site was in regards to the current COVID-19 global pandemic outbreak. Here, in Canada at least, our governments aren't taking this lightly at all and the current circumstances have called for unthinkable and unprecedented measures both on the government's side as well as in the private sector and citizens in general. I also happened to glance a meme in the past few days suggesting something like "the Earth currently thanks everyone, x% of this emission has reduced, blabla a bunch of most likely fictitious stats" but the point was to suggest that this current outbreak and the current halt on just living and consumption globally is helping the planet heal it's "the planet's version of a flu" was the reference I think as well if my memory serves me correctly.

It just got me thinking, 2020 is clearly shaping up to be an unforgettable and memorable year that will be printed in the history books of centuries to come. Would a coin such as this one representing our planet and its issue (I'm guessing) at a time when there's been so much global movement and development on Global Warming and just sheer appreciation for The Earth coincides perfectly with this devastating current situation we are all living and hoping to recover from and move on from, maybe even (I'm hoping) be used as an opportunity to start funding and developing more solutions to prevent this from ever happening again. A serious wake up call.

Would this eventually make this 2020 Mother Earth coin a sought-after and valuable coin decades later? Or values and future values are inherently correlated to practical and logistical facts such as x minted only z known to still exist = $$$ value + rarity or like some type of unforeseen circumstance that either straddles supply (I don't know some fire melted a mould or a shipment of x coins, etc.) or some employee didn't sleep well and made a process mistake yielding error coins, etc. Or can these types of global and macro societal issues contribute to the eventual appreciation of a coin?

(3) In the event my logic for this 2020 Mother Earth coin is totally flawed, is it a fair assumption to make that my way of reasoning and trying to *maybe* identify a potential coin, bank note, collectible in general, etc. Might eventually be worth something? Think Ebola break out —> some guy registers Ebola.com —> flips domain back for x$$$ to some organisation or government funded research site or whatever —> guy cashed in (although maybe a bit immoral) on an unforeseen global situation.

** I posted here because this forum is the only one that makes mention of the Mother Earth coin minted a few years back, if for whatever reason it is in the wrong forum, please just kindly move it my apologies from now*

don't even follow this mistaken thought.
Almost all of them will be worth much less, than retail value.

To be very basic, will be safe to say, that in general, people buying them as hobby and fun.

I'm surprised to see how much product has sold out at the Mint in the last three days.

The RCM makes so many products each year that nobody can or will buy them all. Part of the reason they fail to hold their value is that there are so many, collectors only get a few that appeal to them. Each collector likes different things so the odds that another person wants your favorite is low.

That being said, there are some nice-looking RCM products, and everyone has a few (I do), but 99% of the time they are cheaper 5 years later. So by all means buy it only if you like the design. I don't think that the mother earth theme for 2020 will have any long-term value.

Only for the short term, I would bet (but will not buy) on the variation of coloured SMLs and ASEs with 'Corona Virus" theme.
We should see these popping somewhere with limited production of 200-500, all having COA paper with serial number "2020" ....

Got you guys! And yeah upon further inspection the RCM has pages on pages of original coins that seem to be more "sucker buys" or basically like mentioned, because you personally enjoy a coin's design more than anything else..

But then again I noticed the 2020 Peace dollar that has more reviews than the other coins, is on ebay for 2-3x the retail and most were sent for grading.. apart for 1 which is on an auction right now and it's current price is lower than retail.. @Silveroid that's interesting I'll look into it thank you!

As you noticed correctly, the asking price for Peace dollar is higher, than retail.
Don't forget to check the "sold" price, it usually more grounded.

In general, yes, there is some coin in release, that has a potential to grow in value, short or long term. Hunting and managed to get (for issue price) such coins, it also not investment, but more kind of game and hobby.

Done some research.

There are 3 coins in the Coronavirus series:

Coronavirus Alert - 1st in the series, raised up to $299!

Coronavirus Outbrake - 2nd - available for pre-order $89

Coronavirus Quarantine - 3rd - pre-order $89

Most significant numismatic issue of 2020 or just another PMD for quick money grab? You to decide.
