Grade: I'll say EF-40; nice hair detail; light even wear all over; not much obverse star detail.

Comment: I wish I had one just like it!

I don't know much about classic head half eagles but that looks VF35 to me.

I'd say about VF-30 for detail, with digs and scratches that are probably average for a well-circulated gold coin. Is that a scratch through the date? It looks raised, so maybe it's a die crack.

I'm a bit troubled by some design details. The eagle talons seem detached from the feet and the end of the olive branch seems too thin. The 5 and the D in the denomination are closely spaced. The 1 in the date seems too tall and thin and the obverse denticles are irregular. I would want verification of authenticity on this coin. Have you checked the weight? Original weight should be 8.36 grams. With this amount of wear that might be down a couple tenths.

For comparison, here is an example of a PCGS-certified example from Heritage, graded VF-25. Your coin may be legitimate, but it's pretty clear that it was not struck from the same dies as the PCGS coin.

Gold is a soft metal...honest wear with vertical die crack through date...early gold from the east coast mines in North Carolina or Georgia? VF-30
