How much should a coin be discounted from the usual price if it graded net details due to corrosion or cleaning? Would it depend on the severity, type of coin, and rarity? Is a coin that has been cleaned even hold any value? Just looking for opinions from all the wisdom here on the forum.

THATS A GOOD QUESTION YOU ASKED. I WOULD SAY ALL OF THE ABOVE. THE RARER THE COIN THE MORE IT WILL HOLD A GOOD VALUE.

There will always be a loss of value due to "problem coins". Corrosion is a major problem. It would have to depend on the severity of the corrosion whether there is pitting or not. Some coins are just plain rare. For example, look at the 1793 Half Cent. Almost always found with problems yet, commands a huge price. Just depends on the rarity of the coin (population figures, supply and demand). Cleaned coins will hold there value again, always nicer to have an original coin with no problems obviously, but again, some coins are just always found with problems. When you find a rare sought after key-date without problems, they will always command a higher price tag.

In my opinion there is cleaning and there is cleaning. On the one hand removing dirt, or verdigris carefully, without damaging the surface of the coin can only improve a coin. On the other hand when you see coins with surface scratches due to abrasive cleaning that can only decrease the desirability, and in turn the value.

I know cleaning is a very emotive subject with regard to coins so I say again, this is just my opinion.

Thanks for opinions. I seen a capped bust 1/2 dime that was AU 50 details cleaned and corroded. corrosion didnt look bad, actually couldnt see any in pics and cleaning didnt look to be harsh. It seemed like a decent price. Just wanted to see other opinions.
