Still working on the learning curve of coin collecting so I've come here for the usual expert opinion and advice. I just purchased this 1921 dollar from what I thought was a reliable dealer and noticed the lettering on the reverse looks odd. This was advertised as a BU 1921 Morgan dollar. I've included photos of the entire coin plus closeups of what I think looks altered. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

Looks like you have a nice 1921-D (tiny mintmark above D & O of DOLLAR)

The picture that shows the 'ATE' was posted with good reason, with the question "was this coin altered?"

Coin in otherwise in nice condition, but, in my humble opinion,
some sort of attempt has been made to remove staining around those letters, perhaps with a wooden toothpick, and maybe with the assistance of a common household cleaning liquid.

I notice that there are other small black spot stains on the coin as well - these stains most probably have the color that they do, as a result of the presence of silver oxide or sulfide compounds, or both.
It appears that no attempt has been made to clean those spots. Such spots cannot be removed with an acetone bath, becuse they are inorganic.
