Today I held in my hands...the most gorgeously stunning 1795 Liberty Cap Half Cent.

I gasped when he brought it out to show me...there was only one flaw on her, someone lightly scratched a small H in the area beside her chin but that was it! The date stood out magnificantly and Liberty's face was flawless. The color of the planchet was a light chocolate brown, deep enough to show she has never been cleaned but not too dark to hide Liberty or the wreath.

I was practically hyperventilating and my hands were trembling as I looked closer through my loope. The rim edges were still completely reeded, it was if no one had ever touched this coin. The wreath on the back was pristine...The words ' Half Cent' kept changing in my head to 'Buy Me!'...I wanted this coin like I have never wanted anything else before (I always tell myself this when looking at a coin I am lusting after btw ) but alas I set her back on the counter, took a step back and calmed down before I dropped the staggering 1500 bucks quick.

He tells me that he doesn't care if anyone buys them...he keeps them locked away in the safe and only brings them out whenever someone asks about them.

How do you do it? How do you drop 1500.00 for ONE single coin? I have never spent that much...but I am slowly saving today's nickels and dimes to afford the yesteryears I love so much...and I still am amazing that someone can spend that much for something so small.

Anyone want to 'loan' this copper addicit the 1500.00 needed to get her fix?

Sometimes the best deals are the ones that aren't made. The 'lightly scratched H', in a prime focal area, would completely ruin the coin for me. Every time I looked at it, my eyes would go immediately to that mark. JMHO.

Spending larger amounts on coins isn't for everyone, and in no way determines this hobbies enjoyability. To answer your question, if the coin is the right coin (rarity, eye appeal, consumer demand, originality, and priced right in relation to market), and it really 'floats yer boat', then it's really not that hard after the first one. Most of my purchases in that range have always done well, and have been a joy to own. Again, JMHO.

I paid $2100.00 (and sorry to say this isn't my most expensive purchase) for a draped bust large cent to crack it out of the PCGS plastic and insert it into my 7070 album. As was said it isn't for everyone. The main thing I HAVE to have is it has to be problem free, I will not waiver from this just to have a certain type because the problems would bother me every time I saw the coin or was showing it to someone else, so I think you did the right thing when you walked away from this coin (at least if you are anything like me). You will find it is allot harder to sell a problem coin if needed also so I would hold off for a problem free coin even if its in a lesser grade for the same amount of money over the coin in higher grade with a problem like this one has

How?

#1) Carefully examine the coin;
#2) re-examine the piece;
#3) consider your finances;
#4) Decide if you 'can't live without it';
#5) Carefully count out the cash;
#6) Pass over the cash;
#7) Go home & play with your coin.
