Hello,
Thanks, for the comments, The scanner is the Epson perfection V300. I wasn't to happy with the brand because I have heard bad things about Epson printers but this scanner is very nice. I like the results.
Thanks, Rich

I have a Dell printer/scan that's not to bad. Taking picture's with my Panasonic 5mp digital camera works sooo much better to provide real luster, color and more provides a 3-D image with depth. But I would still like to buy one of them computer to Microscope things (forgot the name) for a real close up picture. The Magnifying glass in front of camera isn't working for a good close up even on macro setting . After zooming and cropping the picture it always fuzzy.

Hello,
I tried taking pictures with my crappy 3 mega pixel camera and the whole process was just so frustrating that I finally just bought the scanner. Thankfully it can be used for a lot more than just coin scanning and it was not that expensive. The pictures are not perfect, I'm not happy with the coloring on some but I could not fix the coloring without ruining the overall appearance so I think they look good considering.
Thanks, Rich

You will find that they scan better out of their holders, laid flat on the glass. (be careful not to touch the coins with bare fingers!)
You can also experiment with which way you lay them on the glass (The direction of the light and therefore the shadows on the coins will change. Also if you place them on the glass out of holders you get a more 3D result as it will scan the edge of the coin on one side.
It's worth trying different colour backgrounds too as it has a different overall effect on the scan.

Here is an example of what I mean. This was lit from below and you can see the edge of the coin on the left hand side.

Ummmm. For goodness sakes, don't take them out of their packaging and put them on the scanner window. Way too delicate to be messing with them like that.
Unfortunately, for things that are encapsulated like that, a scanner will not always be idea because a scanner can't "focus". So if it's not right on the scanner glass, your mileage may vary.
Nice sets. though. I like proof sets. Nice. Shiny.

Depends on the scanner. primax/colorado scanners can scan a baseball.

Depends on the packaging. I am not sure about US mint products but Royal Mint proof sets come apart quite easily, and as I mentioned before, provided care is taken and the coins are not handled without gloves, and you don't allow contaminants inside the packaging, no harm is done. Obviously if you want to keep them in the perspex and to take them out would damage the holder then I wouldn't recommend it. A lot of people take their proof sets apart anyway, to put them in a dansco folder, for example.

That's funny. I had problems with epson scanners but never with their printer other than their printer head expiring after a couple thousands of pages.
