Now here is what happens sometimes when you keep asking someone if they have any old coins. My neighbor is an auto machanic and frequents junk yards for parts and in the dirt and debre if he finds any coins he keeps them. Also, at work if tearing a car or truck apart and find any coins he keeps them. If he finds a coin on the street he keeps those also. All such found coins go into a large jar and have been for many, many years. He also has a freind that cleans up at the end of the day at a bar and also finds coins on the floor that he gives my neighbor and those too go into that jar.
So finally after years of hounding he handed me the jar and said go through it and let me have what's left that you don't keep.
At home I dumped what appeared to be possibly $30 or more in coins on a table.
THEN YUK. At first I pulled out all the dead bugs. Then all the dirt. Then all the coins stuck together. Then I pulled out all the coins I wasn't sure of what they were. Then pulled out the dented, bent, gouged, covered with something ones. All these went right back into the jar. This left about a few handfulls of coins. Then I tried to read the dates and noticed that would take a powerful magnifier and by now I'm getting a little tired.
Finally pulled out one rather clean Canadian Cent and am about to return the mess to my neighbor. I asked and thought there was a chance of something but not really expecting this mess. Now in the process of spraying the area with a disenfectant.

Carl:
Nice, sometimes you get more than you expect.
Hope that the disinfectant works.
Yuck.

I thought you was going to say he brought you a giant water bottle full of coins since he had been collecting them for "many many years"

Next time, ask for shiny new ones... and hope they don't think of applying some steel wool.

just Carl,Do you have a side burner on your outdoor BBQ? or one of them burn your house down turkey deep fryers?. I have used my old BBQ to boil some cents that where covered in goop. I let the water boil over removing all the gunk out of the water then hose down the BBQ later. Your neighbors will wounder what your cooking too(funny smelling crab?lobster?) Oh and don't use the wife's nice pans Goodwill has plenty that burn up nicely on the BBQ. It will clean(kill germs)them up nicely to look at but as for the damaged ones I don't waste my time. I would hate to find a damaged rare coin.

If the coins were just dirty or covered with grease I possibly would have tried something like that. However, as soon as I waded through the insects I sort of lost interest in any possible great coins. Then the ones stuck together made me wonder just what made them stick together and again, started to loose more interest.
NO, these coins needed a high temperature blast oven or Steel mill oven to fix there problems.
And I was hoping for a jar of Indian Head cents. HA!

For a while I did some work for an upholstrer(?). I would disassemble the fabric panels from old chairs and couches, remove all of the cushioning, and lay them out to be used as patterns when he reupholstered them. Of course there were a number of coins that had fallen down the cracks. That work was so dirty, dusty, and nasty that I would often just leave the coins. I can only imagine how nasty junk yard coins would be.
