I scanned this $10 coin, one of my Mother's coins, and I see fine lines like someone tried to clean it. What does that do to the value of the coin? Around the Eagle in the flat area they are very noticeable. Around Liberty's head, it less predominant, but swirly. Is this the sort of damage that makes it worth the price of it's gold or should I have it graded anyway?

Those fine scratches are called Hairlines and they indicate that some kind of abrasive cleaning was performed. They actually don't look too bad in your photo; they can be much worse. If they are in fact "very noticeable" then the major grading services (PCGS or NGC) would not grade the coin.

The coin appears to be lightly circulated and I would estimate the grade at AU-50 to AU-55. The 1904 is a common coin and does not carry much premium beyond its gold content, unless it's mint state. I don't think it would be worth having your coin graded since even if it did grade as an AU-55 it would still sell for about the same price as a raw (ungraded) AU coin.

Thank you for the information. You put it in perspective for me. I could see that lower ratings did not seem much above the bullion price, but hearing someone who knows the area say certainly helps in my final decision. It looks like this one goes to a local coin dealer as is. Thanks, again.

Jaobler is right. Its "looks" like an AU. Just to be sure you might want to take it to a coin shop (a good one or maybe two) just to get their opinion. I always hate trying to grade purely by photos. I can make one of my MS62 half eagles look so much better with a photo than it does in real life. In fact the one I have in the registry looks like it has tons of luster but it is pretty dull. I did not even try to make it look that way..lol I noted it in the description just to be far
