PCGS - A truly historic day, April 30th, 1789 George Washington took his oath becoming the first President of the United States. Many milestones in Washington's life, including his presidency, are chronicled on this "1796" Washington, REPUB AMERI, PE Born 1732 Under Bust Penny graded PCGS MS64BN. Not surprisingly, the grade places this example as one of the finest known of these scarce pieces, and we thank the collectors for entrusting PCGS to secure these celebrated items.

Not a penny, not even a token, it's a medal.

It this something that was (incorrectly) called a penny in contemporaneous times and is now just accepted as such, like calling the modern cent a penny is now?

Regardless, I still want one.

It's a beaut! Not big on toned copper, BUT being true view is exaggerated, I really like the reverse on this. Just the right amount and probably looks better in hand.

Early 19th century for the strike date. Not sure they know anything more specific. From an auction listing:

"Baker-69. Closely related to the American colonial series, the Repub Ameri pieces are named for the lettering that appears on the scroll at the center of the reverse. The obverse has a bust of Washington facing right, with GEORGE WASHINGTON in large letters above, and BORN FEB 11 1732 DIED Dc 21 1799 in small letters below. The reverse has three lines of inscription around the small central motif: GENl OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES 1775, RESIGNd THE COMMd [sic] 1783 / ELECd PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789 / RESIGNED THE PRESIDENCY 1796. Perhaps the latest date on the reverse led the Garrett cataloger to conclude that these pieces "were first issued in 1796," but that is clearly incorrect, as the date of Washington's death would have been unknown at the time. At least one example of Baker-69 is seen struck over a 1797 British penny, and they were apparently struck early in the 19th century"

They used the Julian day and Gregorian year for his birth.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Contemporaneous records used the Old Style Julian calendar and the Annunciation Style of enumerating years, recording his birth as February 11, 1731. The British Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 implemented in 1752 altered the official British dating method to the Gregorian calendar with the start of the year on January 1 (it had been March 25). These changes resulted in dates being moved forward 11 days, and an advance of one year for those between January 1 and March 25.

No idea what is going on with the death date since it was well after the Calendar Act.
