I ordered some coins. They said they were unc. Since the price was $1 for 5 pieces, I wondered what junk will they send. So, out of 5, two are damaged, two seem to be ok.. and the fifth one was this: Pictures 1-2 show the comparison of the junk they send with my EF specimen , Picture 3 shows the amount of marks and scratches, Picture 4 shows clearly the scratched surface of the coin (the whole piece is like this), Picture 5-6 show the amount of detail left on the coin, And the 7-8 show the thing on the edge, that's also visible on pic 4. So how UNC is it? Can it be graded? If so, how? And what's that piece of metal on the edge Every opinion welcome Edited by DL20K 10/31/2008 1:14 pm

That was an obvious typo ... correct description would be "UGHH"

I'd grade the coin on the left as "(J)UNC" However, you coin is a nice one, and the one on the left is either a poor strike, or worn down to F perhaps? The bump on the rim could be from a damaged collar, which might confirm a strike problem, and is interesting in of itself.

I have a theory... The blob was from where a loop was attached and this was an uncirculated coin that was worn as a necklace for many years.

Quote: The blob was from where a loop was attached Now, that's very plausible--given the raised line opposing the rim; it could be a remnant of wire/solder. Is this coin silver? It would be rather odd if it's not.

It's not silver. It's not zinc, definitely. If you need better pictures, please tell me. I'd like to know if it's good for something or should I throw it away. Oh and it came in an old plastic packaging with German writing. I could order more of these, but it will take 2 weeks before I get them. I wonder what they put in other sets

call me crazy but something about that coin just doesn't look quite right. Believe me I am no expert on foreign coins but I am a artist by trade and can usually pick up on differences in design even if I can't tell exactly what is different and this one just seems a little wrong to me for some reason, maybe its the mushy details from it being so uh hum "uncirculated" I don't know

Your all mistaken you know. Unless it was stated that UNC is Uncirculated it could well mean as noted above. Then too it could be just short for Uncertain. Of course another theory is that the ones on the left are the actual Uncirculated coins and yours have been worn in the lower spots leaving the high spots appearing to show more details. Otherwise described as reverse wear.
