Spence Moderator United States 34430 Posts	Posted 04/08/2020 3:49 pm @jmart, if you are asking why they are different despite having similar metal alloys and mintage years, well then that is because they likely all were exposed to different environments over the years--some may have been buried in slightly acidic soil, others in water fountains. The one in your first pic that has a crescent-shaped tone on the rev most likely spent a bunch of time with another half lying partway obscuring it. We see that same patch of reduced toning when coins have glue or adhesive tape left on them for years. You may think it doesn't matter, but it does. Perhaps this coin doesn't matter, but it's best to get in the habit of wearing cotton gloves, just fyi. Report this Post to the Staff
