I've done a lot less collecting in the last few years, but this quarantine has given me the "opportunity" to break out my collection and get re-acquainted with my hobby. Looking at one of my bills (Fr 713, 1914, $1 with large eagle on reverse), I noticed a small mark in the upper left corner on the reverse. I never gave any thought to this and assumed it just got something on it years ago. Yesterday, I looked at it under my loupe and realized it is an ink imprint with the same ink as the bill. However, it does not seem to match up with the pattern on the bill (like if it is just a bit of ink from the bill printed next to it). I'm curious what your thoughts are on what this ink could have printed over from.

Welcome to CCF Captain.
I refer to it as Selvage. It's often seen on large-size notes and sheets and typically at the top. I have a sheet of small-size notes with some selvage at the top and I found two large-size examples from the Heritage archives that I'll share.

Have to say, I get a little excited thinking about an uncut sheet of large size notes.

@SteveInTampa just to confirm, I think you are saying that this is likely part of a mark that was printed on the edges of the full sheet before going into the press and not some kind of off-center cut or weird minor printing error. I think that makes sense considering I can't match it up with actual printing on the bill, but does make me wonder what else was there on the full sheet since it appears to be part of a design and not just numbers/letters.
Thanks for your quick answer.

Selvage is the part of the sheet considered scrap and is supposed to to be trimmed off during the process of cutting the sheet into individual notes. The selvage gets miscellaneous symbols, letters and/or numbers printed on it during the printing process which is considered normal. I do not consider a note with partial printed selvage on the margins as an error. I look at it as being similar to notes with alignment marks on them. This note has both horizontal and vertical alignment marks visible.
