I see what your seeing but it's just a flattened damaged D MM from circulation.

Defiantly just damage. And @John1, didn't over mintmarks stop in like 1989 or 1990 when they got rid of hand punched mint marks?

Just extreme die wear on the 'D' mintmark and the whole obverse die. Heavy die flow show the wrinkles of old age on the die.
