Wow great story and quite strange indeed. I love old coppers, my favorite coins over all others. I bought my first large cent when I was about 12 or 13 years old. It was,in retrospect a very corroded example that was probably dug up. I do not remember the year but I do remember I paid about 4 dollars for it and my friends thought I was nuts! At any rate this was a great coo for this collector, and just goes to show that learning varieties and close study of every coin you buy can really pay off. Mike

Hi, and thanks for the posts. I am the "lucky collector" that owns the S-79. The dealers that were shown the coin were all from the pacific northwest (not a ton of copper experts here), and my personal opinion is that if any of them recognized the coin for what it was, they were not letting it be known hoping that the dealer I got it from would give up and sell it cheap to them. On the other hand, the coin is so extremely rare, there probably arent very many dealers alive in this part of the country or anywhere else for that matter, who have even ever seen a reeded edge large cent. It is funny though, that after I got it authenticated and word got out, there were dealers that were actually mad, claiming they should have had first chance at the coin (snooze you loose) I actually had a guy that claimed to be a buyer for Jack Beymer offer me $40,000 for it back in August. I politely told him I would "have to pass". As I stated in Coin World, this has been an absolute blessing from God, and the circumstances in which it came into my posession were truly remarkable. I must say too, that I had my doubts as to the authenticity of the coin when I bought it. In fact, the original reason I bought the coin was because it had a nice bold date and the word "Liberty" was very clear, and the planchet was so remarkably free of any type of corrosion...Not because of the reeding. I assumed it was probably an altered piece. But as I did my research on it, I soon started having heart palpatations! As you copper guys know, large cents and Half Cents are many times pitted and corroded. This coin is not at all. In fact, I bought a Fugio cent from the same lot that the S-79 came out of and it was the same way! Anyway, We shall see how things go next week in Baltimore!

I am still trying to figure out how to navigate the website, I have a couple of pics I am trying to upload but am having a bit of trouble. I have some pics I took of the Reeding and of the coin in natural sunlight where you can really see that beautiful chocolate color. I think this coin find (for me and others out there) should also serve as an example of not to sell yourself short of the possibility of finding that needle in a haystack. The shop I got this coin from is in a small town with a population of 8500, and the shop itself is less than 400 square feet! The likelyhood of a coin of this magnitude showing up in this setting is next to impossible, yet it did. I am still totally amazed! As far as a cherrypicker comment, I would agree totally. I am also grateful that the shop owner still considers me a good friend even after finding out he sold me what will amount to a winning lotto ticket.

I emailed Kurt S several pics so you all can see what the reeding looks like on an authentic S-79. He was going to host them for everyone, stay tuned!

Just a quick note, if you goto Bowers and Merenas website, and click on the "view lots and bid online" then goto session two lots, there is a video by David Hall of PCGS about the coin
