What a great story. Welcome to the forum XR650. Thanks for sharing. Just goes to show you that you never know when lightning will strike (but you have to walk out in the storm). Love the pics of the coin still raw.

Sooo, Is it a "Jefferson Head"? I know next to nothing about EAC, but looking at the prices I assume it must be if the dealer had what he suspected to be an altered coin with a $1000 price tag... Right?

Well the bidding is over, the heart rate is finally under control, and my S-79 has a new home! After the smoke cleared the winning bidder had to cough up a record $402,500!! This includes a 15% buyers premium of course. Not a bad return eh? I guess there really are pennys from heaven! Keep looking folks you never know where or when you'll find your "ringer"! Take care ~XR650~

No, the Jefferson heads are very different and although rare in their own right they are either easier to come by than the S-79 or at least cheaper.. (The Jefferson Heads are S-80 and a couple of NC varieties. I can't say which because they changed the numbers a couple years ago. When I got into large cents they were S-80 and NC-1. But of the three known specimens of NC-1 there were two different edge varieties and one of them was struck on a thin planchet. later a lettered edge S-80 showed up, although it had been mentioned in Penny Whimsy it hadn't been seen since before the book was published. Two of the NC-1's became I think NC-4 and NC-5,and the lettered S-80 is I think still S-80a.)

Perfect example of why one should keep an open mind and allow the facts of your research lead to the appropriate conclusion. Whether it be yea or ney.

I assume that XR650's coin collection is about to become just a little bit bigger in 2009.
Congrats.
