There might have been a broken post on the die that was supposed to form the inside of the letter D.

Looks like die abrasion, possibly from being scraped by the feeder fingers as you said. I see what you mean about it scraping off the edge of the die, but I don't know if that would be called a Cud if it happened by abrasion rather than a crack and split... Good philosophical question.

The overlap starts at the right of the I in IGWT and runs along rim just short of the 8. Thanks everyone!
