Anybody up for a challenge? This crusty ancient is hard to decipher. It weighs 8.2g and is 26.9mm in diameter. The obverse has a bust facing left with a pointed nose. As for the inscription, in front of the nose at 9:00 it looks like PCAE, and starting at 1:00 it looks like PAVG. The reverse has a standing female figure facing left with her arm outstretched to the left, flanked by C to the right (and likely S to the left but it's not clear). Based on the legible letters, the reverse inscription is likely AEQVITAS AVGVST. Any thoughts on the ID and RIC number?

I have several different photos here. I don't like to take pictures holding a coin, but in this one instance I found it to be the best way to capture the lighting hitting the coin at different angles. Hopefully they help.

These next two images are rotated. 9:00 is top:

These last four are more or less rotated correctly.

There are a couple of Vespasian as coins that could fit: RIC 588, 722, 723.

Thanks erafjel! I can only find RIC 722 on WildWinds. Do you have links to photos of 588 and 723?

There are photos of RIC 588 in the online RIC: http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.2_1(2).ves.588

For RIC 723 there are none and I don't find any elsewhere. But looking again at your coin, I think it is only the shorter inscription "COS V CENS" of 722 that would fit in the space remaining after P AVG. 588 has "P M T P COS IIII CENS" and 723 has "P M T P COS V CENS". So your coin can be narrowed down to RIC 722, I think.

Thanks for the update! I agree that there is only enough room for "COS V CENS" after "P AVG." To clarify, is this entry for RIC 722 the same as the one you're referencing?

Great! Last question: how does this coin grade?

Ok - grading is not something I am that proficient in. This is a very worn coin with only part of the legend readable. Looking at the definitions in the NGC grading scale, I would say this can be no higher than Fair-2 ("Some details are visible. Rims are barely visible.").

Thanks for your help, erafjel! I always thought that attributing this coin was a lost cause, so I'm thrilled to finally know what it is!
