It looks like the obverse die was collar clashed. At some point the die struck the retaining collar and it transferred the edge of the reeding.

Coop has a great set of images and much clearer explanation of what happened. Let's see if he's listening.

What does the reeds look like on the edge of the coin? If flattened, it may be damage?

Thank you Yokosuna and Coop . I knew I should have posted the edges also while looking at this dime I noticed one side is ? Off set ? The band being wider and skinnyer on the other also almost all the inner rim is (sorry) messed up I do not know the word for it .

It appears the reeds are not causing the affected area, so it maybe a collar clash:
Note the affected die on this lower right image:

The die may have taken a hit on the reeds on the collar, altering the edge of the die. That looks like may have been the cause of the problem.
