Need some opinions on this 2017-D penny. I apologize if there is too much glare in the photos, I really struggle taking pictures of shinier coins. The reason I was thinking this might be Die Deterioration is because I can't find a reference for this online. It is possibly a DDR but I am still not confident enough in spotting a true doubled die coin. Also in E pluribus unum on the last S and the first U in unum there is what I think they call a Cud but not sure. Any and all opinions much appreciated.

Thanks

The images are wayyyyy too close. What you are seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling. If you had pulled back, every would see that the metal on the images are flowing to the closest rim. The images are deceiving. It is like looking through a soda straw and try to find a certain start. Perspective is removed when images are too close.

Oh I didn't know that. Thanks for the information. As far as the other markings are those Cuds? Here are some pics that are pulled back. But the glare gets much worse when I do this. Any advice on how to get good pics of shiny coins with minimal glare.

Thanks
Cecilia

A Cud is a break away from the edge of the die. These are large:

Note the image on the right. That is what happens when a coin will have a Cud. That void will be filled as high as the metal can flow into it and leave a weakness on the reverse side of the coin:

Note the weakness on the opposite side:

They can be as small as this:

But I see none of these on your coin.

A doubled die would be enlarged in the centers of the devices:

I didn't know that either thank you for the pictures that helped explain what a Cud is. As well as the doubled die pictures. I still struggle with error coins. I only have a few of them in my collection. I do have some really nice non-error coins though. I appreciate the help and knowledge.

Thanks
Cecilia

The best way to fill in a blank on your knowledge of coins is to ask a question. I usually don't give a yes or no answer, but explain what I see on a coin. So when you say, now I see, then I know I've hit the target. Thanks for all everyone ones fine words. When we show respect for one another we demonstrate that we really are a coin family forum.
