I don't collect these Victorian gaming tokens, but got this one recently and just taking a look at it noticed what appears to be a rather phenomenal doubled die. I can think of other ways this doubling could have occurred, but it just looks like a DDO to me similar to some of the DDOs on 1857 Flying Eagle cents. As someone with little knowledge of what kind of minting process was used to make these gaming coins, I am going to call it a doubled die unless someone figures it out differently. Undated Victoria gaming token - Prince of Wales Model Half Sovereign - doubled die

If that were a legitimate coin, I'd say you're looking at a few G's easily! Great pick up! I love looking at this monster!

Very nice pickup. Congrats. Even the overlapping top "flag" on the E (GREAT) has excellent separation and is easy to see.

That's very interesting - I must re-examine my wee collection.
Was the specimen double stsmped with a slight movement of the token ?
Was the die re-engraved ?

Pertinax, good questions. Looks like a doubled die to me, I am doubtful that a re-engraving would look like that, but a full-details repunch is not out of the question. I just have no idea how they made these so can't really make any better of a guess.

It is certainly an odd piece that you have. I have a holed specimen of this type and there is no doubling of any letters. If it was the same blank struck twice I would expect to see doubling of the letters on the reverse as well.
