I got this recently from a coin store in Brockville, Ontario. It is about the diameter of a US silver dollar. It attracted my interest as I had never seen a token good for a gold nugget. If you think about it, though, theoretically all US coinage other than gold used to be redeemable in gold. So it is kind of a throwback to a by-gone age. Does anyone know whether they were ever redeemed for a nugget? There is no expiry date, so maybe I can still redeem it?

I can see a North Star Enterprises in Haines AK, but they were founded in 1971. Maybe you can find some anonymous prospector?

Here is a 1963 nuggets as close as I can figure It would be one of the smaller ones in the holder which is 50mm dia. also here is one of a small nugget pounded flat, What the old term of goldbeater this is what is used as gold leaf in signage they come in small sheets about 2x3" 25 sheets to a book which is called a bible or was when I learned to leaf. This material is still to thick to be used as leaf

So it may have been close to $2 worth of gold in 1963.

Neat token. Although I can find no reference to this specific company I believe that this token was for use in an Alaskan gold mining adventure tour. There are many still in operation today. The term "grubsteak" means to supply a new arrival with money for equipment and provisions in return for a portion of the gold that he might find. The word "Cheechako" means newcomer as opposed to the experienced "Sourdough" miner you may meet, according to the inscription on the token. Here is a nugget from a similar attraction, albeit in California and not Alaska, that I was fortunate enough to pan out in the early 60's. Don't be too impressed, in retrospect I think the paydirt was, um.... seeded.

Pennywise, about 23 years ago I did a bit of gold panning in California, for the experience. It was a public area, and I did get a few pitiful flakes of gold. I seem to have misplaced those flakes, though.

3rd issue from the North Star Enterprise Series. Unknown number struck in bronze. 49 struck in sterling silver (it is the 49th state). 1 struck in gold and presented to Governor Egan at the inauguration of the Marine Highway. Reference: Alaska's Coinage Through the Years, 1965, Gould, Bressett, and Dethridge.

Quote: I finally found someone with another of these tokens. I lived in Fairbanks from 1967 to 1975 and was able to get all three pieces from a friend of Governor Egon. Here is the whole set: Very nice! to the Community!

Thanks for the "Welcome" comment. I have been a long time coin guy and have learned much over many years. I am coming to realize how much more I need to learn. This forum may assist in this process. The "Unique" gold token in this set is one of my favorites in my collection and is promised to my granddaughter. A few other interesting pieces I have happened to hang on to will be listed in future postings. I am happy to be here.
