Since the 84-S is huge money in MS, I've seen many given a lower grade then if it were, say, an 81-S.
Same thing with 86-0 and a few others.

the 84(S) is typically known for sharp strikes. the breast is weak and the hair around the ear is a little weak so the strike is AVG- she's been banged around and you can see some rub on the breast and eagle head. I had it at AU55

@slider23

Good to know on that , this coin has the same types of marks not sure why the photo is showing them going the same way under magnification the scratches are all different like the second photo as still quite a bit of luster doesn't look like anything I have been able to find online being cleaned ,I may have someone else look at it once this virus blows over, regardless I love the coin and do not plan on ever selling it , has a lot of character

The 1884-S is a notorious condition rarity. It is silver shrapnel below VF and costs more than a new car above a baggy UNC.

By technical grade, both the obverse and reverse are AU-55. @Slider23 nailed it. The coin was very likely drop-graded 0.5 points for eye appeal, possibly because of an improper older dipping and almost certainly for the excessive bagginess, which is most apparent on the obverse. The retoning appears to be natural.

On the obverse, residue from at least two fingerprints is visible, one in the angle inside the right wheat kernels and cap fold and "BUS" of PLURIBUS, and the other between the ribbon and the fifth and sixth right stars. When the first photo is adjusted to enhance color,reduce light, and sharpen contrast, multiple parallel bag marks exist from Liberty's throat to her jaw and from her cheek to her ear. Some of those are fairly deep. There are many light surface NW-SE scratches from rubbing or cleaning in the fields and on the devices. The reverse is better. The strike is weak for the date, but not excessively so. I see the bag marks and scratches as the primary reason for an eye appeal adjustment.

Overall, PCGS nailed the grade here. It is consistent with other grades I have seen from PCGS for years, and I don't see a reasonable potential for an increase in grade by resubmission. If anything, there is a greater risk of the coin being detailed on resubmission.

JMHO, but I'd leave it alone as a straight-graded 53.

Thanks Fortcollins I was not planning on resubmitting , I do really like the coin and think it has nice eye appeal in the hand though the scratches are much harder to see with the eye
