When I graduated high school in 1974 I went down to the bank and bought rolls of uncirculated 1974-S pennies, the last year that "S" Lincoln cents were going to be made for circulation. I stuck them in a canvas bank bag for 40 years. I opened the bank bag last month to find that most of them are heavily "toned" in "rainbow" colors. Are "toned" modern coins more or less valuable? Depends on who want's them? (I can take a photo if needed.)

That's a good question, some collectors like toned coins and some don't, usually the deep rainbow, naturally toned coins are more desirable to that class of collectors.Show us some pics.

Some people are turned off by toning, a few are indifferent, and some rather like it. A few collectors are willing to pay a good price for cents with strong 'natural' toning. Looking forward to seeing the photos.

It all depends on eye appeal.

I usually like my 95% copper Cents to be full red like the day they were minted . But an uncirculated Natural rainbow can be very beautiful to the eye and usually command a premium over the average red unc.

It really all comes down to taste. For me personally, vibrant, natural toning on any coin is pretty, but I get that it isn't for everyone. I'm sure you can sell some of these for a small premium. As with everybody else, can't wait for the pics

Also wanted to ask, was it public knowledge at the time that the 1974-S cents would be the last ones made for circulation? If so that's really cool, never knew that

I really like the toned Lincoln pennies. Especially the 95% Coppers. Would love to see some pics as well.

Yes, please do post some pics. The answer is it depends. It depends on the collector and what exactly the "toning" is. If you look at my avatar, that is a coin I am absolutely in love with. I have numerous Lincolns in my Dansco that are similar. I personally would pay a little bit more for one that is what I consider attractive.
