Hi,

Hi,

It appears to be a Repunched mintmark. It has some but not all of the S/S/S characteristics. It could be a late die state of the S/S/S or it could be an S/S that I am not familiar with. In any case I feel that this one is more than just damage and is an RPM.

Thanks,
Bill

This is 1938S-1MM-002, S/S/S West and West. On a circulated example where the mintmark has been flattened somewhat, the secondary S becomes more or less invisible. The knob sticking out is actually the lower serif of the third S.

These (as well as the other two known 1938S RPMs) are rather common in BU, and circulated examples are generally not highly sought after. I have seen this particular die in grades as high as MS67RD, so a circulated example would generally be looked at as a beginner's hole filler for the die at a buck or so.

Understood. Generally when people ask questions about die varieties they want two things...identification and value. Instead of just giving the value, I like to explain more or less why, so collectors, especially newer collectors, can get a good idea of:

a. Whether their item is scarce or common.
b. What the value of their item is.
C. Why it's valued the way it is (usually related).

You can never get too much information.
