Looking at some Proof's I stumbled on to this. Could it be a DDR or just Die Damage? I can't find any like this other then the newer 5c with the DDR in the Doorway. what do ya think, Posable New Listing? THANKS.

Certainly looks like it could be, especially since it is located towards the center of the coin.

If you go to the PCGS home page for 1971s proof nickels the main coin they highlight looks like it has something similar. So it might be a design anomaly that year?

Can't say for sure, but I think there's a good chance it could be one. Send it to Brian Ribar.

The problem is the year. On the single squeeze dies that area is affected. But this is a 1971-S nickel. It was made with the multi hub system. So that area is not affected on those doubled die. These dies were only used 6,000 times before they were retired. So why that area looks so bad for die condition, is beyond me? I wonder it was a worn hub issue that created that die like that. Probably one I need to check into to see if was a common issue that year?

My 1971-S proof nickel has this as well.

It's not easy to see in these pics, but it's actually 2-3 parallel incuse lines just inside the doorway.

It looks like re-engraving done to the master die, similar to what Wiles/CONECA believes the 1972 LMC "doubled master die" to be.
