Hello I bid on ebay for this one peso 1906 without the S because I wanted to complete my sets of one peso under the USA Philippines coins from 1903-1910 for now and I have the 1903S is stunning weigh 27.0 grams and the 1904S also stunning pure silver weigh 26.9 grams and the 1905S is also 26.9 grams they are stunning coins like brand new coins, they are my original coins I saved and the rest of the coins I bought on ebay weigh from 19.6-20 grams. But I got this 1906 shipped from London seller and this 1906 is supposed to be at least 26.9 grams because based on the history from 1903-1906 should have the same dimension, size and weight but in my surprise it is weigh this 1906 just weigh 18.0 grams only , the weight is lower than my 1907-1910 Which it looked like its fake because its lightweight for a 1906 one peso coin. I felt like I was cheated for this 1906 and I paid $61.00 plus $18.99 for the UPS Ohh well! I will not buy from this man again. i will keep this and frame all my coins from 1903 -present, to see all the coins and the bank note of the Philippines islands! My native land!

Krause World Coins notes that counterfeits of the KM# 168 1906S Peso exist but does not give a weight. That fakes of the 1906S exist is perhaps not too surprising. The temptation to fake them is there, because the catalog value of them (> $1,000), is quite high. Some pictures posted may be of some help, along with seller's ebay description.

can someone help me see where this is a really bad fake? I would never buy such a coin. I'm just very interested in understanding, if I were to think about such a coin, how would I have seen the fake. I look at the picture out of Krause and it seems like this is a pretty good fake (if there is such a thing). Just looking for some education thanks

The best way to identify fake coins of any genre is to read all that you can about them, and to familiarize yourself with them, by examining them carefully in hand.
Sometimes, it is much harder to identify convincing fakes from on screen pictures only, and partly explains why the scammers can get away with their fraud.
The telltale signs left behind by their method of manufacture often betrays the fake.
If the intending buyer is unsure, then follow the 'gut' feeling, and do not buy. Always buy from a seller that depends on his good reputation, and has an unquestionable return policy.
With highly valuable coins, third party provable provenance is highly desirable, along with independent examination and testing. That is where Third Party slabbing becomes important for an intending buyer with less than professional knowledge.

I think it would be safe to say when you buy $1000 coin off of ebay for $61 you're going to get a fake.

Always ask the seller to provide the weight.

Quote: can someone help me see where this is a really bad fake? I am still a learner, so I take opportunities like this where an expert gives us a starting point, and then I compare to a certified example with good photos like this: https://www.coinarchives.com/4e1186...age31121.jpgI think you will begin to see the differences. Many letters in the legends are poorly executed, most easily seen on the eagle side. If you start by looking at the Es and Ts you will see. The stars on the shield are also more poorly executed, there is a lot more space between the blowing hair and garments at the woman's neck (which is also too thin), the dentils look wrong (too much space between?). Probably to the experts there are even more major things, but these are what I could see.

If you just bought this coin through ebay, you can certainly return it if you wish. Though having a reminder of a mistake is also not a bad thing. Also I would note this seller had some questions raised in his feedback, even though they did not amount to a neutral or a negative (see: Hawaii and Hong King Trade dollar).
